Living God, bless your church in the world.

May we stand as a sign of hope for all,

an example of your unfailing love.

May we be faithfully Christ-like,

Isaiah 6: 1 – 13

LEADER:        In the year that King Uzziah died,

I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty;

and the hem of his robe filled the temple.

PEOPLE:         Seraphs were in attendance above him;

each had six wings:

with two they covered their faces,

and with two they covered their feet,

and with two they flew.

LEADER:        And one called to another and said:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory."

PEOPLE:         The pivots on the thresholds shook

at the voices of those who called,

and the house filled with smoke.

LEADER:        And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost,

for I am a man of unclean lips,

and I live among a people of unclean lips;

yet my eyes have seen the King,

the LORD of hosts!"

PEOPLE:         Then one of the seraphs flew to me,

holding a live coal that had been taken

from the altar with a pair of tongs.

LEADER:        The seraph touched my mouth with it and said:

                        "Now that this has touched your lips,

your guilt has departed

and your sin is blotted out."

PEOPLE:         Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

"Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?"

And I said, "Here am I; send me!"

LEADER:        And he said, "Go and say to this people:

'Keep listening, but do not comprehend;

keep looking, but do not understand.'

PEOPLE:         Make the mind of this people dull,

and stop their ears, and shut their eyes,

so that they may not look with their eyes,

and listen with their ears,

and comprehend with their minds,

and turn and be healed."

LEADER:        Then I said, "How long, O Lord?"

And he said:

"Until cities lie waste without inhabitant,

and houses without people,

and the land is utterly desolate;

PEOPLE:         until the LORD sends everyone far away,

and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land.

LEADER:        Even if a tenth part remain in it,

it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak

whose stump remains standing when it is felled."

The holy seed is its stump.

ALL:                Amen.

Songs of Praise

I Am So Glad

1.   I am so glad that our Father in heav'n

Tells of His love in the Book He has given,

Wonderful things in the Bible I see:

      This is the dearest that Jesus loves me.

      REFRAIN:           I am so glad that Jesus loves me,

                                    Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me,

I am so‑glad that Jesus me,

Jesus loves even me.

2.   Tho' I forget Him and wander away,

      Still He doth love me wherever I stray;

      Back to His dear loving arms I do flee,

      When I remember that Jesus loves me.

                  REFRAIN:           I am so glad that Jesus loves me,

                                                Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me,

I am so‑glad that Jesus me,

Jesus loves even me.

3.   Oh, if there's only one song I can sing,

      When in His beauty I see the great King,

      This shall my song in eternity be:

      '‑'O what a wonder that Jesus loves me."

                 REFRAIN:            I am so glad that Jesus loves me,

                                                Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me,

I am so‑glad that Jesus me,

Jesus loves even me.

Commissioning of Team Cuba

MODERATOR:     There are different gifts,

                                but the same Spirit who gives them.

                                There are different ways of serving God,

                                but it is the same Lord who is served.

                                Each one of us is given gifts by the Spirit,

                                to use for the common good.

                                Together we are the body of Christ,

                                and individually, we are members of the body.

(To Congregation:)    Friends, I present to you this morning

                                those who will represent this congregation

                                on a mission trip to Cuba.

(To Team Cuba:)   Carol, Ron, Kimberly,

                                Margery, John, and Dave,

                                I present to you the people

                                who have given of themselves

                                to support you on this trip,

                                and who will continue to support you.

                                They believe your mission is important.

TEAM CUBA:        We accept the responsibility

                                of representing this congregation

                                in doing the work of our Lord

                                in a distant place.

                                We will work to exemplify Christ's teaching

        by loving one another and all those we meet,

                                and by translating Christ's message

                                with enthusiasm and care,

                                turning strangers into friends,

                                and friends into brothers and sisters.

                                We will serve in this special work

                                with energy, intelligence,

                                imagination and love,

        treasuring our experiences

                                as opportunities to teach, learn, and grow.

CONGREGATION:            We, the members and friends

of Port Williams United Baptist Church,

                                    accept you, Carol, Ron, Kimberly,

                                    Margery, John, and Dave,

as missionaries chosen to extend

our Christian love and concern

to others in Cuba.

We will support you

with our prayers during your trip

and with our interest on your return,

                                    recognizing your special contribution

                                    to the work of the Church

as our own.

MODERATOR:          Let us pray: Gracious God, we present our

                                    hopes for these specially commissioned this

morning.  In every age you have called forth

servants to speak your word in unique and

varied ways.  We thank you for these people

whom you have called to serve you.  Give

them each gifts to fulfill their tasks.  Fill

them with your Spirit so they may accept all

those they meet, and be faithful and joyful

in their work .  Bring them safely home and

then let their experience further enrich us so

that we, too, may better serve you.  Amen.

TEAM CUBA:                         Creator God,

give us strength, wisdom and love

to work for you

as we serve others in Cuba.  Amen.

MODERATOR:          You are now commissioned by this,

your church family.

Go forth, doing everything

in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

giving thanks to God through him.

Amen.

LEADER:        Praise the LORD!  Praise the LORD from the

                        heavens; praise him in the heights!  Praise him,

                        all his angels; praise him, all his host!

PEOPLE:      Praise him, sun and moon;

                        praise him, all you shining stars!

                        Praise him, you highest heavens,

                        and you waters above the heavens!

LEADER:        Let them all praise the name of the LORD, for

                        he commanded and they were created.  He

                        established them forever and ever; he fixed their

                        bounds, which cannot be passed.

PEOPLE:      Praise the LORD from the earth,

                        you sea monsters and all deeps,

                        fire and hail, snow            and frost,

                        stormy wind fulfilling his command!

LEADER:        Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all

                        cedars!  Wild animals and all cattle, creeping

                        things and flying birds!

PEOPLE:      Kings of the earth and all peoples,

                        Young men and women alike,

                        old and young together!

LEADER:        Let them all praise the name of the LORD, for

                        earth and heaven.

PEOPLE:      He has raised up a horn for his people,

                        praise for all his faithful,

                        for the people of Israel who are close to him.

ALL:               Praise the LORD!  Amen.

Let Freedom Ring!

LEADER:        In the beginning, God brought creation out of chaos

                        and spoke humanity into being with the words:

“Let there be… !”

PEOPLE:      O God, give us power to speak the words

                        that will bring the positive possibilities

                        of a new creation into existence.

LEADER:        And after God spoke the universe and humanity

                        into existence, God spoke again and said:

                        “It is good! It is very good!”

PEOPLE:      O God, give us power to speak the words

                        that will celebrate and affirm the wondrous

                        virtue of your entire and awesome creation.

LEADER:        And in the fullness of time, God spoke again,

and this time the Word of God became flesh;

and the living Logos made a tabernacle among us.

PEOPLE:      O God, give us power to speak the words

that will abide in the hearts and minds

of all people; words that will call each of us

into your marvelous light.

LEADER:        And in a tumultuous time in our past, God spoke to

us through the prophet, Dr. Martin Luther King,

Jr., saying: Although the Church has been called to

combat social evils, it has often remained silent

behind the anesthetizing security of stained-glass

windows… How often the Church has been an echo

rather than a voice, a tail-light behind the courts

and other secular agencies, rather than a

headlight guiding men and women progressively

and decisively to higher levels of understanding.

ALL:              O God, we confess that our silence in the

                        face of injustice is sin.  Forgive us, and give

                        us the power to speak the words that will

                        challenge the systems of inequity

                        represented in the principalities and powers

                        of this world.

LEADER:        And through the words of Christ, God spoke to us,

                        saying:

PEOPLE:      “If the Son makes you free,

you will be free indeed.”

LEADER:        And through the words of the Apostle Paul, God

                        spoke to us, saying:

PEOPLE:      “For freedom Christ has set us free.

Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit

again to a yoke of slavery.”

LEADER:        So we boldly and courageously speak the words:

                        “Let freedom ring!”

PEOPLE:      Let freedom ring!  Our destiny lies in our

                        willingness to speak until the strongholds of

                        prejudice and bigotry crumble before God’s

                        new creations of justice and equality for all

                        of God’s children.

LEADER:        We will not be silent.  Let freedom ring until every

                        shackle of racism, sexism, classism, militarism,

                        and nationalism is broken.  Let freedom ring!

PEOPLE:      We will not be silent: Let freedom ring!

                        For the freedom of every human being,

let freedom ring!

For the salvation of the world,

let freedom ring!

ALL:              For the glory of God, let freedom ring!

                        Let freedom ring!  Let freedom ring!

                        Amen!

WE APPROACH GOD

Journeying God,

You who beckon us to join you on the road,

be with all your people

as we set out into this new year.

Give courage to the cautious,

strength to the weary,

vision to the short-sighted,

and hope to those who are broken in spirit.

Light our path and stay close at hand,

as we follow in the footsteps

of Jesus, our Lord.

Amen.

Songs of Praise

Spirit, Open My Heart

REFRAIN:     Spirit, open my heart

to the joy and pain of living;

                        As you love, may I love

in receiving and in giving,

                        Spirit, open my heart

 1.  God, replace my stony heart

      With a heart that’s kind and tender.

      All my coldness and fear

      To your grace I now surrender.

2.      Write your love upon my heart

      As my law, my goal, my story.

      In each thought, word, and deed,

      May my living bring you glory.

3.      May I weep with those who weep,

      Share the joy of sister, brother.

      In the welcome of Christ,

      May we welcome one another.

Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness

REFRAIN:     Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,

                        blow thro' the wilderness calling and free,

                        Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,

                        stir me from placidness,

                        Wind, Wind on the sea.

1.       You moved on the waters,

you called to the deep,

            then you coaxed up the mountains

            from the valleys of sleep;

            and over the eons you called to each thing:

            wake from your slumbers

            and rise on your wings.                  REFRAIN

2.      You swept thro' the desert,

you stung with the sand,

            and you goaded your people

            with a law and a land;

            and when they were blinded

            with their idols and lies,

            then you spoke thro' your prophets

            to open their eyes.                           REFRAIN

3.      You sang in a stable,

you cried from a hill,

            then you whispered in silence

            when the whole world was still;

            and down in the city

            you called once again,

            when you blew through your people

            on the rush of the wind.                REFRAIN

4.      You call from tomorrow,

you break ancient schemes,

            from the bondage of sorrow

            the captives dream dreams,

            our women see visions,

            our men clear their eyes,

            with bold new decisions

            your people arise.                            REFRAIN

Isaiah 43: 1 – 7

LEADER:        But now thus says the LORD,

                        he who created you, O Jacob,

                        he who formed you, O Israel:

                        Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;

                        I have called you by name, you are mine.

PEOPLE:      When you pass through the waters,

                        I will be with you;

                        and through the rivers,

                        they shall not overwhelm you;

                        when you walk through fire

                        you shall not be burned,

                        and the flame shall not consume you.

LEADER:        For I am the LORD your God,

                        the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

                        I give Egypt as your ransom,

                        Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.

PEOPLE:      Because you are precious in my sight,

                        and honored, and I love you,

                        I give people in return for you,

                        nations in exchange for your life.

LEADER:        Do not fear, for I am with you;

                        I will bring your offspring from the east,

                        and from the west I will gather you;

PEOPLE:      I will say to the north, "Give them up,"

                        and to the south, "Do not withhold;

                        bring my sons from far away ,and my

                        daughters from the ends of the earth.”

LEADER:        Everyone who is called by my name,

                        whom I created for my glory,

                        whom I formed and made

                        will be welcomed home.   Amen.

Isaiah 60: 1 – 6

LEADER:       Arise, shine; for your light has come,

                        and the glory of the LORD

                        has risen upon you!

PEOPLE:     For darkness shall cover the earth,

Inquirers’ Class

Have you recently considered baptism or church membership?

Have you ever wanted a place to ask questions freely

about the Christian faith, or to explore what it means to be Baptist?

Would you like to deepen your understanding of your faith?

If you answered, “Yes,” to any of these questions, perhaps you would

consider joining a group of other “inquirers” in a six-week study.

The group, led by Rev. Dave Ogilvie, will meet at the church on Monday evenings, from to , beginning on January 18.  We will explore together the basics of the Christian faith, the Baptist heritage and expression, and other topics of interest to the participants.  It is truly a place to ask honest questions and to seek meaningful answers.

Everyone is welcome!  It is intended that if there is enough interest, a separate class will be organized at another time for young people.  If you are interested in being involved, please fill out the form below and give it to Dave, or drop it off at the Church Office.  Thank you.

Not beyond the earth,

not beyond the stars,

not cocooned in heaven,

listening, healing,

mending, forgiving,

May our worship this Christmas

reflect your closeness

and your loving commitment to all people.

Amen.

Star-Giving

                                    A poem by Ann Weems.

LEADER:        What I’d really like to give you for Christmas

                        is a star...  Brilliance in a package, something you could keep in the pocket of your jeans, or in the pocket of your being.

PEOPLE:      Something to take out in times of darkness, something that would never snuff out or tarnish, something you could hold in your hand,

LEADER:        something for wonderment, something for pondering, something that would remind you of what Christmas has always meant:

PEOPLE:      God’s Advent Light into the darkness of this world.

LEADER:        But stars are only God’s for giving, and I must be content to give you words and wishes and packages without stars.  But I can wish you life...

PEOPLE:      as radiant as the Star that announced the Christ Child’s coming, and as filled with awe as the shepherds who stood beneath its light.

LEADER:        And I can pass on to you the love that has been given to me,

PEOPLE:      ignited countless times by others who have knelt in Bethlehem’s light.

LEADER:        And perhaps, if you ask, God will give you a star.

                        Amen.
